The crossing is a brief 40 minute ride and upon arrival proceed to the lined up school buses which are your transportation around the island and each bus will have a Robben Island guide for the transfer to the main prison. The history tour is operated by former inmates of this prison with poignant lectures and sometimes humorous input.
From the 17th to the 20th centuries, Robben Island served as a place of banishment and imprisonment. Today it is a World Heritage Site and museum, a poignant reminder to the newly democratic South Africa of the price paid for freedom. Today, the tour is important for all visitors to experience all phases of the Island, to realize that the Island is a place of pain and a place of triumph and victory.
During the afternoon enjoy a private car and guide tour of Cape Town. Visit – The area, known as the Malay Quarter of Cape Town, nestles against the steep slopes of Signal Hill. It formerly covered a much larger piece of land but this has been restricted over the years by incursions from commercial development and the threat of Apartheid legislation. It is one of the oldest parts of Cape Town, and is one of the few to have retained some of its historical character. The last stop is to the base of Table Mountain where you board a cable car ride up to the top of the Mountain. Here you will have fabulous views of the city and plains in the background (weather permitting). Some free time at the top to stroll around for various views.
Overnight: The Commodore Hotel. (B)

Day 5 (Sunday) Cape Town / Cape Peninsula
The first stop this morning is at Hout Bay, where you have a short boat ride to visit Seal Island.
Hout Bay was formerly a fishing village and has managed to maintain its unique combination of fishing harbor and country atmosphere, despite development. Its long, sandy beach faces a bay framed by mountains and is quite simply exceptionally beautiful. Capetonians throng here over weekends to partake of the local fish & chips and to catch a glimpse of the resident Cape seals that make the harbor their home. After a brief tour to Seal Island, re-board your vehicle and drive along Chapman’s Peak.
Chapman’s Peak stands imposingly at the heart of Chapman’s Peak Drive, connecting Hout Bay with Noordhoek along one of the most dramatic marine routes in the world that hugs the coast of the Atlantic Seaboard for nine kilometers. Chapman’s Peak Drive climbs steadily from the harbor of Hout Bay, skirting 114 curves of Chapman’s Peak to follow the rocky coastline along some truly magnificent views of the sandy bays below.
Continue to the Cape of Good Hope Nature Reserve, established in 1939 to protect 7750ha of indigenous flora and fauna. The reserve comes to an end at majestic Cape Point. Situated at the junction of two of earth’s most contrasting water masses – the cold Benguela current on the West Coast and the warm Agulhas current on the East Coast, the Cape of Good Hope is popularly perceived as the meeting point of the Atlantic and the Indian Oceans.
The first stop after lunch is to Boulders Beach. African penguins inhabit twenty-seven sites. Most are on inshore islands, of which the best known is Robben Island. There are only three of them on the mainland sites. The largest existing colony is on St Croix Island near Port Elizabeth, with about 50,000 birds. Dassen Island off Yzerfontein, once home to over a million penguins, now has about 30,000, while Dyer Island near Gansbaai has about 20,000. The most remarkable of the mainland colonies is in Simon’s Town with over 2500 birds. After a visit to the Penguin colony, start heading back towards Cape Town. Along the way, make your final stop at Kirstenbosch Botanical Gardens.
Kirstenbosch National Botanical Gardens are the oldest and largest botanical gardens in South Africa. Left to the people of Cape Town by Cecil John Rhodes in 1902, the area comprises 528 hectares, of which 36 hectares consists of cultivated gardens. Situated on the eastern slopes of Table Mountain, Kirstenbosch Gardens contain a wide array of indigenous flora, trees, birds and small animals.
