Antananarivo, formerly Tananarive, is the capital and largest city in Madagascar. It is also known by its French colonial shorthand form Tana.
Built on a narrow, rocky ridge, Antananarivo occupies a strategic point at the center of the island of Madagascar. Two forts watch over the city from the east and southwest, while within the city limits lay royal palaces, embassies, some fifty churches and a mosque. The city’s most distinguishing feature may be the burnt out remains of the Rova, or Queen’s Palace, situated on a prominent hill. Its steep alleys and stairways make Antananarivo a challenging place to tour on foot. We recommend one tour of the city to get your bearings and then you could wander on your own and discover the city.
The drive into town will take approximately 30 – 40 minutes this evening and expect to reach the hotel just after midnight this evening for check in.
Overnight: Hotel Colbert Tana – (B)

Day 6 (Friday) Tana – Madagascar.
Sleep in this morning after a long flight from Paris. Have a leisurely breakfast and explore the hotel facilities after breakfast. Perhaps explore the capital for the day on your own and get over jetlag before we start our journey through Madagascar.
Overnight: Hotel Colbert Tana – (B).

Day 7 (Saturday) Tana / Peyrieras Reserve / Andasibe.
This morning you will be met and transferred to Andasibe and Mantadia National Park.Along the way, just after about 45 miles, we will make a stop at the Peyrieras National Reserve. This privately owned reserve is named after the entomologist and naturalist André Peyrieras. It offers a good introduction to the fauna of Madagascar, with numerous varieties of chameleon and butterfly, as well as geckos, frogs, crocodiles and some enormous bats. The reserve is located in a beautiful valley in the middle of mango and lychees plantations. From a hill, where a historic building dating from the beginning of the 20th century is built, visitors can admire the nice landscape with its ravines covered by lush forest.
After your private visit to this nature preserve, your driver guide will suggest a local place for you to purchase lunch. You will then continue on your private drive for 60 minutes to Andasibe.
Upon arrival, check in to your lodge and spend some time exploring the grounds. Enjoy a drink in the airy restaurant, take a dip in the pool and opt for a night walk on the estate, seeking out colorful chameleons and nocturnal lemur species.
Overnight: Vakona Forest Lodge – one King bedroom Bungalow. (BD)

Day 8 (Sunday) Andasibe.
Today, set out on a morning and afternoon short hike to explore the Lemurs residing in the forest jungle with your naturalist guide.
In the park you can find 14 species of lemurs, 51 species of reptiles Boa of which the famous Boa Manditra and 84 species of amphibian. In the rivers of Mantadia several endemic fish species of which two are classified among the threatened species by the International Union of the Conservation of the Nature (UICN): Ratsirakia legendrei and Rheocles alaotrensis. Finally, the bugs are the most numerous.
The ecosystem of Mantadia depends on its lower-case letters animals: They are the pollinators of the plants of flowers, the recyclers of the nourishing elements of soil and the organic garbage. In the food chain, the bugs are the food of many birds and mammals.

Day 9 (Monday) Andasibe / Tana / Antsiranana / Joffre Ville

Day 10 (Tuesday) Amber Mountain / Ankarana Park.
This morning after an early breakfast, check out of the lodge and set out by 4 x 4 from Joffre Ville and drive to Amber Mountain for some leisurely hiking with your guide.
Montagne d’Ambre (Amber Mountain) National Park is located around 30 km south of Diego Suarez. It was established in 1958 and protects a total surface of 185km². This massif rises from the surrounding dry region forming an isolated stretch of montane rainforest covering an area of 18.200 hectares and lying at altitudes between 800 and 1.470 metres. The park offers a great biodiversity: a huge tropical forest with endemic fauna and flora, luxuriant vegetation and many waterfalls and volcanic lakes. The climate is perfect, the cool air refreshes after the heat of the lowlands. The dominant ethnic groups are the Sakavala and the Antankarana. All the circuits are clear and well maintained, so it not hard to explore the park.
The easiest and most visited one goes to the Sacred Waterfall (Cascade Sacree).
Stop somewhere locally suggested by your guide for lunch on your own account. Then continue to Ankarana National Park, stopping by Red Tsingy.
Tsingy Rouge, a hidden creation of nature in response to man’s destruction.
This fascinating geologic oddity did not exist 50 years ago. As a result of the deforestation the red clay soil began to erode and over time this has revealed the pink sandstone tsingy that can now be seen. The sandstone will erode over time and hence, the tsingy will not exist. However, with the continued erosion of the red soil, it is believed that other sections of the pink sandstone will be revealed.
At the base of the valley, the soil is solid clay and hence the water does not permeate into the ground but merely runs off.
After a brief stop at Tsingy Rouge, you will continue to Ankarana National Park.
Overnight: Iharana Lodge. (BD)

Day 11 (Wednesday) Ankarana National Park.
Today enjoy early morning and mid-afternoon 2 hour hikes along the trails of Ankarana
National Park with your naturalist guide. The Park is in fact one of the most visited specially among hikers: it offers incredible trails, unique and terrific landscapes and a lot of animals!
This reserve contains one of the highest density of primates of any forest in the world. Its dense forests support one of the largest and least disturbed populations of crowned lemurs. Sanford’s brown lemur, perrier’s black lemur, northern sportive lemur and dwarf lemurs, ringtailed mongoose, fossa, tenrecs and Madagascar striped civet are also a common sight.
Almost 100 bird species, 50 reptiles (including some endemic and threatened snakes and geckos) and 10 frogs cohabit in the Park. Inside the spectacular and huge labyrinth of caves 14 bat species, local endemic blind shrimps and the world’s only known cave-living crocodiles are waiting for your visit.
