OVERVIEW

This 9 days / 8 nights package is centered on the most important cities in Martin Luther's path to protestant reformation.

  • Welcome dinner at the Hotel in Berlin.
  • Visit to Berlin and its many well-known historic locations , like Under den Linden Avenue, the State Opera and the Brandenburg Gate, German Parliament and Potsdam Square.
  • Visit to Wittenberg, designated as “Lutherstadt” (Luthertown).
  • Short visit to Torgau to take a photo stop at the place where Russian and American army joined hands, bringing the end of  WWII a step closer. Also visit to Hartensfels Castle, the first time Martin Luther consecrated a reformed church.
  • Visit to the tomb of Katharina von Bora, Luther’s wife. Also, we will stop at the building where Luther, Melanchthon,Jonas and Bugenhagen worked out the basic ideas of the Torgau Articles in 1530.
  • Visit to Thomaskirche, where J.S. Bach served as choirmaster for 25 years and where Luther preached and introduced his ideas for the reformation to the people.
  • Visit to Weimar, the highlight of German culture during 18th and 19th century.
  • Visit to Erfurt. There Luther became a student and a monk. Visit to Augustinian monastery, where he lived as a monk.
  • Visit to Esileben, including the house where Luther’s was born, the Peter and Paul church where he was baptized, The church of St. Andrew he last preached, and the huse of the count Mansfeld, where he died.
  • Visit to Eisenach, starting with a tour to the Wartburg castle. Luther stayed there for almost a year protected by prince Elector Frederick the Wise. Later, we visit the Bach museum, pass by the Luther house of the Cotta family who provided the young Martin Luther with a Latin language education, preparing him for University in Erfurt.
  • Return to Frankfurt, with evening at your leisure.

Day 1: International Flights – USA to Frankfurt

Day 2: Berlin

Arrival at Berlin Airport and transfer to the airport. The rest of the day is free to spend at your leisure. At 07 pm you will meet your guide for the welcome dinner at the hotel.

Day 3: Berlin

In the morning we visit Berlin´s many well-known historic locations, like Under den Linden Avenue, the State Opera and the Brandenburg Gate. There will also be time to explore the modern parts of the city, such as the German Parliament and Potsdam Square. The afternoon is free to explore at your leisure.

Day 4 Berlin – Wittenberg- Dessau

After breakfast we proceed to Wittenberg, designated as “Lutherstadt” (“Luther Town”). It was here that Luther gained notoriety by posting his 95 theses to the door of the Castle Church, sparking the movement that would become the Reformation.

Day 5: Dessau – Torgau -Leipzig

On the way to Leipzig stop in Torgau. There we take a photo stop at the war memorial, where Russian and American troops have joined hands at the River Elbe in Germany, bringing the end of the war a step closer. Afterwards there will be a “Kodak moment” at the Hartenfels Castle, where Luther consecrated for the first time a reformed Church, according to his own ideas. We are going to visit the tomb of Katharina von Bora, Luther´s wife and stop at the building where Luther, Melanchthon,Jonas and Bugenhagen worked out the basic ideas of the Torgau Articles in 1530. Then we continue to Leipzig and visit the city. Visit the Thomaskirche, where J.S. Bach served as choirmaster for 25 years and where Luther preached and introduced his ideas for the reformation to the people.

Day 6: Leipzig – Weimar –Erfurt

Today we leave for Weimar. This City is the highlight of German Culture from the 18th and 19th Century. It was the focal point of German Enlightenment. Home of the leading characters of the literary genre called “Weimar classics”: the writers Johann Wolfgang von Goethe and Friedrich Schiller. In the afternoon we continue to Erfurt also called the “Thuringian Rome”. There he became a student and a monk. Here he also met many of his faithful friends, such as Spalatin, Jonas, Lang and Draconites. Visit the Augustinian Monastery where Luther lived as a monk and admire the Merchants´ Bridge (Krämerbrücke), the longest series of inhabited buldings on any bridge in Europe.

Day 7: Erfurt – Eisleben -Erfurt

Today we go to Eisleben. In 1996 UNESCO added the Luther memorials to its World Heritage List, making the “Lutherstadt” Eisleben a much visited destination of Germany. Here, in the region of the Counts of Mansfeld, Martin Luther was born in 1483 and died in 1546. We will visit the house of his birth and the Peter and Paul Church, where Luther was baptized. We also visit the Church of St. Andrews, where he last preached and the House of the Counts of Mansfeld, where Luther died. Luther’s birth house and Luther’s last residence are today Museums rich of historical documentation supported by UNESCO.

Day 8: Erfurt – Eisenach -Frankfurt

Today we start to Eisenach visiting the Wartburg. There, a Castle Guide is waiting to give an inside Tour of the Wartburg. The Wartburg is the most famous landmark for Lutherans all over the World. Martin Luther stayed here for almost a year, protected by the Prince Elector Frederic the Wise. Here he translated the New Testament. Thereafter we see the Bach Museum, pass by the Luther House of the Cotta family who provided the young Martin Luther with a Latin language education, preparing him for University in Erfurt. The program ends at Frankfurt airport, here you will check into your airport hotel with the evening at leisure.
