You will have today at your leisure, sleep in enjoy a lovely breakfast. May we suggest you take a taxi to the famous Portland Saturday Market?

Portland Saturday Market was the brainchild of two women, Sheri Teasdale and Andrea Scharf. Both were artists living in the area who had sold at the Saturday Market in Eugene; their idea was to create a similar style of market in downtown Portland. Beginning in December 1973, the two visited everyone they could think of in the city to sell their idea: an open-air market of all handmade food and craft items. It would be a win-win situation they insisted. Artists would have an economic outlet for their work, customers would gain better access to locally-produced items, and the city would have a new attraction to draw customers into the downtown area.

At 4:00pm you will go to the front desk and register for your program starting tomorrow. Dinner will be catered and served at the hotel.

Wildwood Recreation Site is located along the Mount Hood Scenic Byway near the town of Welches, Oregon. DECLARED A NATIONAL HISTORIC LANDMARK IN 1977, Timberline Lodge is one of Oregon’s most popular tourist attractions, drawing nearly two million visitors every year. Morning: Explore the beautiful Rose Gardens, with its famous overlook of the city of Portland. Founded in 1917, Portland’s International Rose Test Garden is the oldest official, continuously operated public rose test garden in the United States. During World War I, hybridists sent roses from around the world to Portland’s garden for testing and to keep the new hybrids safe from being destroyed by the bombing in Europe.

Continue on to a delightful docent-led excursion through the tranquil Japanese Gardens, proclaimed to be “the most beautiful and authentic Japanese garden in the world outside of Japan.” The garden includes a formal Japanese Tea House, meandering streams, intimate walkways, and an unsurpassed view of Mt. Hood.

Afternoon: Head to downtown Portland for an expert guided walking tour of the history, art and architecture of this unique Northwest city. See and hear the stories behind many unusual details that even most locals miss.

Portland got its name when Asa Lovejoy and Francis Pettygrove flipped a coin in 1845. Lovejoy was from Massachusetts and he wanted to name the new settlement Boston. Pettygrove was from Maine and wanted to name the new town Portland. Pettygrove won the coin toss two out of three times and the rest as they say is history. Portland’s first Post Office opened in 1849, and the steam saw mill’s whistle could be heard as far away as Fort Vancouver.

Dinner: Dinner on your own to explore the local cuisine. There are many delicious restaurants to choose from. The hotel hosts a wine social if you’d like to return to the hotel before deciding which restaurant to try.

Overnight: The Clarion Hotel Portland International Airport. (B, L)

Day 5. Wed.  Astoria/Fort Clatsop/Fort Stevens/Wine Lecture & Tasting. (Full day)

Have an early breakfast this morning before your excursion out of Portland.

Morning: Early departure for all day fieldtrip to the Oregon Coast. Travel to Astoria, the oldest American settlement west of the Rockies. Continue on to Fort Stevens, a coastal defense fort which saw active service from the Civil War days to the end of World War II. The fort was built to protect the North against an English invasion from Canada, should the British join the Civil War on the Confederate side. In its long history, Fort Stevens never fired its guns in anger.

Fort Stevens was once the primary military defense installation in the three-fort, Harbor Defense System at the mouth of the Columbia River (Forts Canby and Columbia in Washington were the other two). The fort was in service for 84 years, beginning during the Civil War and closing at the end of World War II. Today, Fort Stevens has grown into a 4,200 acre park offering exploration of history, nature, and many recreational opportunities.

Lunch: Picnic lunch at Fort Clatsop.

Afternoon: Explore reconstructed Fort Clatsop, the winter encampment for Lewis and Clark and the Corps of Discovery from December 1805 to March 1806. The visitor center includes a replica of Fort Clatsop similar to the one built by the explorers, an interpretive center offering an exhibit hall, gift shop and two films. The center features ranger-led programs, costumed rangers in the fort and trailheads for the Fort To Sea Trail and Netul River Trail as well as restrooms and a picnic area.

Dinner: Dinner at hotel.

Evening: In the past 40 years, Oregon has grown to world class wine making status. In this evening’s expert lecture, you’ll hear the story of how that came to be. You’ll learn about a few of the fabulous varieties for which the state is becoming known and taste some samples.

Day 6. Thu. Columbia Gorge/Multnomah Falls. (Full day excursion)

It’s 80 miles long and up to 4,000 feet deep with the north canyon walls in Washington State and the south canyon walls in Oregon State. Through millenniums of geologic events, waterfalls have found their home in the Columbia River Gorge. A visit to the area is not complete without a visit to its breathtaking waterfalls. Travel through the gorge and learn about the interesting geology of the area. View the waterfalls as you continue to The Dalles for a visit to the Columbia Gorge Discovery Center.
