A drive through Tiergarten Park takes them past Bellevue Palace (built in 1785 for Frederick the Great’s youngest brother and now the president’s official residence), the Old Congress Hall (now the House of Word Cultures) and Grosser Stern. At the Eastern end of the park stands the Reichstag, the 19th century Parliament building built for the Prussian parliament and later used by the Weimar Republic, which now hosts the Federal Republic’s Reichstag. Nearby, marking the beginning of Berlin’s East you see Unter-den-Linden Street with its famous Brandenburg Gate, the symbol of the city since its completion in 1791 and familiar to all who watched the telecasts from Berlin as the Wall was breached. During the city’s division, the Brandenburg Gate was in the no-man’s-land on the Eastern side of the Wall. Atop the Gate is the Victory Quadriga, a two-wheeled chariot driven by the Goddess of Peace and pulled by four stallions. You will also see Europe’s largest construction site of Potsdamer Platz, where Berlin’s former “Time Square” is being transformed. In the former Eastern Sector, tour highlights include Humboldt University, the State Opera, the Berlin Cathedral, Gendarmenmarkt Square with its twin German and French Cathedral and Alexander Platz with the TV-tower and its turning telecafé. Today little remains of the former Wall, but one section, the East Side Gallery, still serves as a reminder of the terrible days of division.
Another highlight of our tour is a visit to the Checkpoint Charlie Wall Museum. This museum was built at the site of the now demolished Checkpoint Charlie border crossing. During the building of the Wall in August 1961, Checkpoint Charlie was the famous scene where Americans and the Soviet tanks had their stand off with motors running and guns loaded. From August 1961 to October 1990 (when Germany was reunited), diplomats, allied military and foreigners (but not Germans or Berliners) used this crossing to enter or leave East Berlin via West Berlin.
